Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the buzzword of the moment and rightfully so. SEO can help lead generation in a big way. It is the process by which you try to optimise your website to ensure that it appears in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), ideally on the first page of the results.

But how is SEO important for Lead Generation? Can improving your SEO help your business generate qualified leads?

The answer is: most definitely.

Improving your SEO allows potential customers to find your business more easily and quickly. We all know most searchers do not scroll further than the first page of search results. Making sure that you feature on the first page has become increasingly important.

Here are our top tips to help you refine your SEO and get onto the first page of Search Engine Results.

1) Research your Keywords for optimal SEO results

Keywords are possibly one of the most important aspects of SEO. Almost every article or post about SEO will tell you how important choosing the right keywords is.

The truth is that if your business relies at all on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS) to generate traffic for your business, keywords are imperative. Good keywords ensure that your business is being listed in the search results of your  potential customers.

One of the best ways to help improve your keywords is to not only include single-word keywords, but rather to include long-tail keywords which can include location, specific descriptive terms and more, making it easier for your potential customer to find you.

The second important consideration when choosing keywords is the intent behind them – what your potential searcher is looking for. Ideally you want a mix of content to cover every stage of the lead generation funnel – but try focusing on content that targets consumers near the end to quickly boost results!

2) Post content regularly – consistency is key for lead generation!

Consistency is key, how often do you hear that? Whether in relation to exercise or posting content on your blog or website, making sure you keep up with posting new and interesting content regularly allows Google to see your site as up to date and active.

Google, along with most other search engines, prefers to “show” its users the newest, most up-to-date content rather than content that may be outdated or irrelevant.

Additionally it is important to  make sure that your content is engaging and offers your readers an “on-going source of value”. This also helps with interaction from your readers and is a great tool to build trust and entice readers to ‘convert’.

Lastly, the frequency with which search engines like Google is a key factor in getting new pages discovered. Regularly putting out content signals to them that you have something to say. It also shows that they should scan your site more frequently.

3) Use an SEO Friendly Site Structure

This tip is so often underestimated. Making sure that you have relevant titles, headings and structure on your blog can be the difference between your site being listed on the first page of search results or not.

Carefully making use of the HTML tags for Title, Heading 1 or H1, Heading 2 or H2 and so on, helps search engines understand your content easily and quickly. It is therefore important to ensure that while you are using the different headings, you are also using keywords in those headings.

An important thing to remember is not to stuff your keywords into your post – this is a big SEO no-no. Rather keep your content natural, easy to read and up to date with relevant headings and subheadings.

The second thing to look at is the “hierarchy” of your site. Pages “higher up”, i.e. closer to the home page, are seen as more important – but having your site structure laid out logically is a great way to give crawlers an easier time making sense of your website.

4) Use Visuals, Images and Alt Text to optimise SEO

Images and visuals help your user experience and the professional look and feel of your blog. They also can help your SEO, if you are using them correctly.

What a bonus!

Images and visuals offer you an additional opportunity to to embed keywords, links and alt texts that give Google (and other search engines) more to crawl on your site. These additional descriptions and keywords can often carry more value and weight than the ones you use throughout your text.

Additionally, using these fields helps visually impaired users who rely on text-to-speech adapters access your site!

5) Use a carefully curated Call-to-Action

This is probably the most powerful tool for conversion in any form of online marketing. Include a clear call to action on every page of your website or blog. This can help encourage your readers/potential customers to convert.

While a Call-to-Action is not necessarily an SEO tool, ensuring that your call-to-action describes exactly what your potential customers can gain from your offering. This content helps your SEO as it helps answer search queries and long tail keywords that may seem odd in other sections of your site.

Conclusion

SEO is a tool that all businesses should be using to help with lead generation. By improving your SEO you are able to increase your chances of being listed on the first page of search engine results pages which is a huge factor for organic lead generation. Further by ensuring that your keywords are researched properly and tailored to your potential customers (as well as their intent), it increases the chances of them finding your business.
