Cost per click is the number most advertisers watch on ChatGPT Ads, and it is also the most misunderstood. This guide explains how CPC works on the platform, what drives it up or down, and how to judge whether a click is expensive.
How CPC works on ChatGPT Ads
When you choose the Clicks objective, OpenAI bills you per valid click to your landing page. You can also choose Conversions with click billing (oCPC), where the system aims for people likely to convert but still charges per click. Either way, you set what you are willing to pay and the system decides when to show you based on expected relevance.
What clicks are costing
Search Engine Land, writing from live campaigns in August 2026, reported average CPCs of about R33 to R83 ($2 to $5) across industries. They also noted that setting a maximum CPC below about R50 ($3) triggers a warning in Ads Manager that your ad may not deliver, which looked to them like a fixed threshold rather than a reflection of competition. Earlier, The Next Web reported bids of about R50 to R80 ($3 to $5) when click buying first appeared.
Rand figures use about R16.50 to the US dollar (October 2026). Two cautions. First, these are mostly US figures; South African prices may differ as the local market fills. Second, the platform changes often, so check the current guidance inside Ads Manager before you bid.
Is R50 a click expensive?
It depends entirely on what happens after the click. A simple test:
- Work out your conversion rate from this kind of traffic (start with your Google Ads rate as a guess).
- Divide your CPC by that rate to get cost per sale or lead.
- Compare it with your average order value or lead value.
For example, at a 3% conversion rate a R50 click means about R1,650 per sale. That is fine for a R5,000 product and painful for a R400 one. This is why we see ChatGPT Ads suiting considered purchases first: travel, finance, education, higher-value retail and B2B services.
Five ways to bring CPC down
- Write better context hints. Describe the real problems your customers ask about, not your product categories.
- Match the landing page to the conversation. OpenAI uses your landing page as a relevance signal. Send people to the specific product or service, not your home page.
- Use a strong image and plain headline. The ad sits beneath a helpful answer, so it needs to read as useful, not loud.
- Narrow your countries and platforms. Campaigns let you choose countries and devices. Spend where you can deliver.
- Track conversions properly. Conversion-optimised campaigns need clean conversion data to learn who is worth paying for.
CPC versus CPM: which should you choose?
Choose Clicks when you want site visits and can measure sales. Choose Views (CPM) when you mainly want to be seen in a category conversation, for example during a launch. Most performance brands should start with clicks or conversions, because that makes results comparable with Google Ads.
The Syte take
We judge every click by the sale behind it, not the price on the invoice. If you want a second opinion on your bids or a structured first test, see our ChatGPT Ads management service or book a ChatGPT Ads strategy call.
