Every few years a new advertising channel opens up, and the brands that test it early tend to learn the cheapest lessons. ChatGPT Ads are now live in South Africa. Here is an honest view of why they are worth testing, and when they are not.
Reason 1: you reach people while they are deciding
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Ads as a way to reach people "as they explore, compare, and decide within a single conversational experience". Someone asking ChatGPT to compare running shoes, plan a family holiday or choose accounting software is often further along than someone scrolling social media. Ads appear below the answer, labelled as sponsored, with your name, logo, headline, description, image and a link to your site.
Reason 2: matching is based on intent, not just keywords
Instead of bidding on exact keywords, you give OpenAI "context hints" that describe the conversations and topics where your product is relevant. OpenAI is clear that these are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee placement. In practice this rewards brands that describe their customer's problem well, which is a skill good search marketers already have.
Reason 3: competition is still thin
Most advertisers have not run a single ChatGPT campaign yet. Trade press reported CPMs falling sharply in the months after launch as OpenAI widened access. Fewer competitors usually means more room to test and learn before prices settle. That window will not stay open indefinitely.
Reason 4: it pairs naturally with AI search visibility
Paid ads sit next to organic answers. If ChatGPT already recommends your brand in its answers, an ad reinforces it. If it recommends competitors, an ad is one of the few ways to get into that conversation quickly while you build organic AI visibility. Our free AEO rank tracker shows where you stand today.
When ChatGPT Ads are not a good fit
- Your buyers pay for ChatGPT. Ads are not shown to Plus, Pro or Business users, so senior B2B buyers on paid plans may never see you.
- Your category is restricted. OpenAI limits several categories, so confirm eligibility first.
- You cannot measure sales. If tracking is broken on your site, fix that before adding any new channel.
- Your budget is very small. Click prices are higher than many social platforms. A test that gets 40 clicks teaches you nothing.
The Syte take
We treat ChatGPT Ads as a test channel with a clear question: does it produce sales at a cost per acquisition that beats or complements Google Ads? We would not move core search budget until the data answers that. If you want to find out for your brand, see our ChatGPT Ads management service.
