ChatGPT Ads pricing in South Africa: what it really costs

ChatGPT Ads pricing in South Africa: what it really costs cover image

ChatGPT Ads are live in South Africa, and the first question every marketing manager asks us is simple: what does it cost? This guide sets out how OpenAI bills, what advertisers have reported paying so far, and how we would plan a first budget in rand.

How ChatGPT Ads are billed

OpenAI's own documentation says ChatGPT Ads supports impression and valid-click billing. When you create a campaign in ChatGPT Ads Manager you choose one of three objectives:

  • Views (CPM): you pay per 1,000 impressions served. Best for awareness.
  • Clicks (CPC): you pay per valid click to your website.
  • Conversions: delivery is optimised toward a conversion event, but you are still billed per valid click (oCPC) or per 1,000 impressions (oCPM). OpenAI states plainly that you do not pay per conversion.

Budgets can be set as a campaign total or as a daily budget. OpenAI describes the daily budget as an average over seven days, so a single day can spend above the figure you set. If you need a hard cap, use the campaign-total budget.

What advertisers have reported paying

OpenAI does not publish a rate card, so the best evidence comes from agencies and trade press that have run campaigns:

  • Launch pricing: the early pilot in February 2026 was sold at roughly a R990 CPM (about $60) with high minimum commitments, according to Digiday and EMARKETER.
  • Falling CPMs: by April 2026 Digiday reported CPMs between about R410 and R740 ($25 to $45), with some buyers seeing lower.
  • Cost per click: after OpenAI added click bidding, The Next Web reported bids of about R50 to R80 per click ($3 to $5), and Search Engine Land reported average CPCs of about R33 to R83 ($2 to $5) across industries.
  • Minimums: the pilot minimum fell from about R4.1 million to R825,000 ($250,000 to $50,000), and self-serve opened to all advertisers in May 2026.

These are mostly US figures. South African auctions are newer and smaller, so local prices may differ. Treat the numbers above as a planning range, not a quote.

Turning dollars into a rand budget

Rand figures in this article use about R16.50 to the US dollar (October 2026). OpenAI bills in dollars, so your real cost moves with the exchange rate. A simple planning method:

  1. Take the reported CPC range of about R33 to R83 per click, and check it against the day's exchange rate.
  2. Decide how many clicks you need to learn something. We like at least 300 to 500 clicks before judging a campaign.
  3. Multiply the two. That gives you a realistic test budget rather than a hopeful one.

For most South African brands this lands in the range of a meaningful monthly Google Ads test budget, not a small experiment. If that is too much, start with one product line or one service rather than spreading money thinly.

What else affects cost

  • Relevance: OpenAI says ads are chosen on expected relevance and outcomes, using the conversation, your landing page, your copy and the context hints you supply. A weak landing page costs you twice: fewer impressions and lower click-through.
  • Audience limits: ads only show to adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Business users never see them, which narrows reach for some B2B audiences.
  • Restricted categories: some industries cannot advertise at all, so check eligibility before you plan.

The Syte take

Price per click matters less than price per sale. We set up every ChatGPT Ads test with proper conversion tracking from day one, compare it against Google Ads on the same products, and only scale when the cost per sale holds up.
